Learn your way around Sokoban

Take a moment with Sokoban before moving to another game. Push every crate onto a target. Use the example below to understand a decision. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Something to practise

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Use the example to check your reasoning.

The challenge in front of you

Push every crate onto a target. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

How a round unfolds

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Choosing and moving on screen

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Check any mode label before starting.

Learn from a sample situation

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the game’s format in mind.

A useful caution

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
