Four in a Row: learn through an example

Open Four in a Row, check the instructions and begin a round. Connect four discs horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a winner is a draw. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Practice with a purpose

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Connect four discs horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a winner is a draw. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Work through the instructions

  1. Player 1 selects a column.
  2. The disc falls to that column’s lowest empty cell.
  3. Player 2 chooses a column, and turns alternate.
  4. Watch for horizontal, vertical and both diagonal lines.

Using the playing area

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

A useful example

A diagonal requires support beneath each disc. You cannot drop a disc into the middle of an empty column. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Look for the relevant detail.

Pay attention to this rule

Selecting a full column does not use your turn. Compare the situation with the worked example. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
